The world’s largest sea surface temperature increase off the Sanriku coast since 2023

Shusaku Sugimoto (A01-1), Yuma Kawakami (A03-7), et al. showed that the ocean temperature anomalies off the Sanriku coast have been at a record high (+6℃) since the spring of 2023 due to the extreme northward meandered Kuroshio Extension, by using observational data from the Japan Meteorological Agency R/V Keifu Maru and satellite data, as presented in a paper of Journal of Oceanography and the press release and covered by TV Asahi etc.
Habitable Japan will be conducting shipboard observations off the Sanriku coast using R/Vs Shinsei-maru and Seisui-maru this June to July.
