2025 Summer Observation Campaign off Sanriku #7
Posted: 2025.06.27
Starting at 16:30 today, continuous hourly atmospheric and oceanic observations will be conducted for 61 hours at three locations: Seisui-maru, Shinsei-maru, and Otsuchi (Atmosphere and Ocean Research Institute, the University of Tokyo). The observation locations of the two vessels are in the sea surface temperature front area on the northern edge of a warm eddy that pinched off from the Kuroshio Extension in February. Sea surface temperatures, which had recently returned to normal levels, have recently risen again, creating a marine heatwave state of about 3°C above normal. We will investigate the impact of the sea surface temperature front associated with the marine heatwave on the Yamase.
